Research Questions

Main Questions

  • What percentage of work-from-home ads are non-scam?
  • What kind of jobs is related to work-from-home ads?
Research Plan

Detecting the work-from-home ads: Select from ads with specific keywords in their ad title or body of the message.

As we didn’t have a specific category for work-from-home ads, the team gathered a dataset of 550 expected ads based on related keywords.

Step 1: I started to review items one-by-one to flag those that were work-from-home ads, and the result was only 66% of them were work-from-home ads.

Step 2: I correlated the ads with our data from the scam database to determine the distribution of scam and non-scam ads. And the result was 46% of those ads were scams.

Action Plan:
  • Updated the booklet of the ads review operation team to put the suspicious ads on the verification funnel.
  • Design to inform users before contacting the advertiser and asks them to report if they expected something suspicious.
  • Design a guide section to help users become aware of the scam scenarios
